Books Among Teens

Books Among Teens
By Diego Munoz and Emmanuel Delgado
Teens at all age should at least read 30 minutes a day to perform better academically and discover what makes a good author.
Books are important to school and education. A student is required to read at least 30 minutes a day to become proficient in English. Some good writer and their books have left their mark on some students.
Cesar Munoz a sophomore at South East High School said, “My favorite author is Wilson Rawls. I have been fascinated by his writing techniques. Where The Red Fern Grows is a book I read and I was fascinated by his writing style.”
In most English classes teachers assign students to read a book and make summaries. Books were created for school use and sometimes to get informed about famous people, without books education wouldn’t be as fun. Munoz said, “I don’t like to read books, but when it comes to education they do make up a big role.” When a student reads more it should be easier for them to perform better on any test.
Reading can give students great advantages, including scoring proficient in the CST (California Standardized Test). Yesenia Martinez a soft more at SEHS, said, “Reading helps a lot in the English section of the CST.” On the CST there is an English section and there are some words that many people have problems understanding. Several books may have the words that come out in the CST. Martinez said, “I see many people struggle with the English part of the CST. Students should read more books if they want to score better in the CST. Students should read more books if they want to score better in the CST.”
Reading is important in order to stay at the appropriate reading grade level. In English class reading is what the teacher recommend for student to do better in class. Martinez said, “It is important for students to practice reading not only is it fun, but makes you smarter.”
Teachers recommend reading every day for thirty minutes. “Reading every day is possible, it maybe doesn’t have to be books anything to read is fine.” Martinez said. In many English classes teachers assign books to students to read on their own time and it becomes the reader’s responsibility.
Many students read books because they just love it. Evangelica Juarez, a junior at SEHS, said, “I read about 7 books per year. I like reading when I have spare time.” Many teachers encourage students to read books to improve vocabulary. Juarez said, “I think reading books helps me a lot because I perform better on my vocabulary [tests].”
Many authors write for teens. Juarez said, “My favorite author is Edgar Allen Poe because the way he writes is very unique. I like his stories and poems.”Among teens there is always a book that is read the most. Munoz said, “[Among] students in [our] school I hear that people seem to like Twighlight by Stephenie Meyer.” Some people do read books over and over .Martinez said, “I have read To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee more than 3 times and I think it is still fascinating.”
For some people books will always be the step to success academically. Juarez said, “For me there is no doubt that books will be the step for the next generation to succeed.” In other hand Martinez said, “Books are sometimes helpful but I think the internet is going to be the next big thing for students to succeed.”

Alcoholism is Harmful To Humanity

Alcoholism is Harmful To Humanity
By Diego Munoz & Oscar Basurto
“Alcohol is a very powerful, addictive drug that some people of all ages enjoy in low doses, but that is damaging or even lethal in high doses.”-WebMD
Alcohol is a drug found in beer, wine, and liquor. According to WebMD when a person drinks alcohol to a point where it is too much for their body to handle they become intoxicated. Intoxication is when a person is being damaged physically and mentally.
Christopher Casillas, a freshman at South East High School, said, “My uncle drinks and he suffers painful physical symptoms when he doesn’t have alcohol in his blood.”
Alcohol is a drug used and abused by many Americans. When alcohol is used over a long period of time it leads to cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis is a disease that scars healthy liver tissue and is usually caused by long-term alcohol abuse. Another thing that long-term alcohol use does is that if you have Hepatitis C alcohol will only make it worse.
Mr. Sanchez, a health teacher at SEHS, said, “Alcohol abuse is when you drink alcohol too much and at inappropriate times.” Alcohol is really harmful because, not only does it harm the user, but it harms the family of the user. Alcoholism can affect a family when the user passes away. When a person is an alcoholic they can become more aggressive towards their family and others. Mr. Martinez, a health teacher at SEHS, said, “One of my family members passed away due to alcoholism.”
Alcohol is very common among teens because of peer pressure. According to the National Center Of Addiction and Substance Abuse, “almost 80% of high school students have tried alcohol,” even though the legal age for a person to start drinking is 21.
Some people think differently. Casillas said, “I think that people should start drinking over the age of 25.” Adriana Munoz, a junior at SEHS, said, “I think it is best to start drinking at the age of 21, but in moderation. When you drink, its best if you do it when there is someone sober you know to take you home.” A person is most likely to drink because they want to fit. While it could be as simple as liking the taste. But the main thing that will put a person to drink is influence by others.
People drink for many reasons. Munoz said, “I think people drink because they believe they can forget about their problems.” Out in the world there are many brands of products that contain alcohol and some families drink just one product because of family traditions. Martinez said his family mostly drinks “Corona” which is a Mexican beer. While Casillas said his family “drinks Coors Light all the time.”
“Products with alcohol cause people to suffer from high blood pressure,” said Sanchez. Alcoholism strikes some families while to others it just doesn’t. Munoz says, “No I don’t have any alcoholics in my family. No one in my family has passed away from such addiction.”
Groups like Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Alcoholics Anonymous group (AA) and Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD) have experience helping people with alcoholism. Martinez said, “These groups are always good to join as long as they provide help and keep people from their addiction.” Casillas said, “I do think it works but only for a while no one knows what an alcoholic can do after.”
The AA official website says, “Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. Our mission is to affect change in our separate communities through individual chapters. To help people get through these bad decisions that will affect the lives of others and their own.”
When it comes to holidays some people start drinking. This causes the police to be more aware of the situation. Officer Zamora, a police at SEHS, said, “People definitely drink because they are going through hard times with the economy, and they find another reason to drink because of the holidays.” When a person drinks and drives they are in risk of harming themselves and others. Zamora said, “During the Holidays in the City of South Gate the arrest rate for drinking and driving goes up [3 to 5%]. It is known that many Americans drink more when special events are taken place.

Are Juniors Ready for the SAT?

Are Juniors Ready for the SAT?

By Diego Munoz

Junior Jaguars take the SAT at South East High school for college and university admission.

One of the most important steps to succeed and apply for colleges is the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT), which is offered to juniors. There is no doubt that the SAT is the test that prepares a student for college and universities. Adriana Munoz, a junior at SEHS, said, “I think the SAT is very important for my future, when it comes to applying for colleges and universities.”

The SAT is a test a junior must-take. In order to do excellent on the SAT, preparation is a must- do to be on their A-game. Adriana Munoz said, “It’s always good to start studying sometime ahead so that you could be prepared. I say a student should always start studying once they become 11th graders.” As every student knows any test has its challenge and the SAT is not an exception. The SAT is structured for high schools, because some colleges and universities require it for admission.

The SAT is made up of 3 school subject’s Math, English and Writing. When a student takes a test, they are sure that if they don’t do well at the test it will most likely affect them. Evangelica Juarez, a junior at SEHS, said, “I don’t really think about what could happen if I don’t pass the SAT because I try to think that I will pass it and achieve a high score.” Juniors seem to be very serious about the SAT, which could mark their life thoroughly. Both Adriana Munoz and Evangelica Juarez claimed that in order for them to get a decent score in the SAT they must practice by taking the pre PSAT which stands for (Practice Scholastic Achievement Test). The PSAT, created the opportunities for every junior to have experience, to see what the test will most likely have and to get an idea of the type of questions the test proposal will have. The SAT will most likely be taken at school with supervision. In a different point of view Juarez said, “I think any time is good to begin studying and prewriting for the SAT. Someone can start as early as 8th or 9th grade.”

Tips never hurt a first time person. Tips are very helpful and juniors might want to consider some advice from person who has already experienced taking the PSAT and the SAT. Carmen Beatriz Munoz, a graduate from SEHS and a sophomore who attends to Cal State University Long Beach, said, “When I applied for CSULB I was asked for my SAT scores.” Her tip to all juniors is to study the top- rated vocabulary words the SAT offers. Carmen Beatriz Munoz said, “I studied all 500 words starting from 9th grade to 11th grade and it did benefit me through out the test course.” All juniors taking the SAT should A’s the exam and start to develop there future.

The SAT could mark a junior’s life. The best way to achieve a high score on the test is to study ahead for the SAT. Taking the PSAT is always the best way to start off. The SAT shouldn’t be the exception for colleges and universities to not want a student. As Adriana Munoz and Evangelica Juarez said, “the SAT is not a joke”.

A Farewell To Summer

Today is the first day of school and i have, met a very extraordinary person who is named Oscar Basurto. Who this summer went to the Asuza River Mountains along with his family. During his trip to the Asuza River Mountains he went swimming and he also had a chance to see a dead fish. The dead fish was a cat fish.Oscar didn't really do much with the fish he did not find it interesting. Although he went to the Asuza River Mountain he spent most of his time playing his X-box 360 and basketball with his friends. The Basurto family decided to go to the Asuza River Mountains because Oscar's godparents had told them that it was a great place to spend a great summer. Oscar along with his family had a great time there and they will always remember all the good memories and he his hoping to go there again in the future.
